History

Animal Concern Cumbria was founded in 1981 in the South Lakes area by Kay Callaghan and a group of her friends
Miss Monica Snashall, Mrs W. M. Hammond,
Mr N.B. Forsyth, Miss Margaret Outred,
Mr Bernard Outred, Misses B and D Hazelden and Mrs Shillito.

In 1984 Mrs Jean E Harrison established the Dalston, Carlisle Branch, which took over from the Keswick Branch and later evolved to be The North Lakes and Solway Branch as it is today.

A little later the West Cumbria Branch was established by
Miss Linda Lockney, who worked tirelessly in the area until 2007, when ill health forced her to resign, but the work in West Cumbria goes on and we also have a small branch at Millom.

What started as a small group in
South Lakes has now become a county wide organisation and we are delighted that this year we will be celebrating our
30th Year of work finding new homes for dogs, cats,
small animals, poultry and occasionally larger animals too.
